OSSE to Hold Two Public Hearings on the Proposed National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS) Proposed Policy

OSSE posts proposed policy on National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS) for public comment

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires states to adopt the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS) for the purpose of providing instructional materials to blind persons or other persons with print disabilities.

The adoption of NIMAS will support local education agencies (LEAs) in their work to ensure that eligible students have the widest range of supports and services available under the law to ensure access to the general curriculum.

A summary of the proposed policy is included in the public hearing notice. Persons are encouraged to read the proposed policy for full detail.

The comment period begins Thursday, May 12, 2011, and concludes at 5 pm on Monday, June 13, 2011.
